Raising an Organized Child with ADHD

My guest is Damon Korb, M.D., a board-certified developmental and behavioral pediatrician who examines the neurodevelopmental brain functions that determine how a child learns, behaves, and socializes. As the clinic director of the Center for Developing Minds, he guides a team of child development experts who care for struggling children and young adults. With the recent publication of his award-winning book Raising an Organized Child, Dr. Korb aims to provide parents with an assortment of tools to help their children develop the skills they need to thrive. Dr. Korb has nearly 30 years of pediatric practice experience, including 25 years focusing on child behavior and development.

In this episode, Dr. Korb explains the complexities of ADHD, describing it as a genetic neurological condition that affects focus, attention, and self-control. He highlights the impact of ADHD on children's school performance, mentioning higher dropout rates, increased reprimands, and the struggle with consistency. He also discusses how these challenges affect children psychologically and emotionally.

Dr. Korb introduces the concept of mental energy, processing controls, and self-control as key components of a functioning attention system. He explains how breakdowns in any of these areas can manifest differently in each child, influencing their behavior at home and school.

To help children with ADHD, Dr. Korb outlines five steps to raising an organized child: be consistent, introduce order, give everything a place, practice forward-thinking, and promote problem-solving.

Dr. Korb provides practical advice on managing screen time and implementing organizational tools like calendars and planners. He stresses the importance of collaboration between parents and children in creating effective systems and routines.

In conclusion, Dr. Korb encourages parents to seek assessment if they suspect ADHD, read relevant literature, maintain perspective, and support their children with patience and love. He acknowledges the challenges of parenting but emphasizes the long-term goal of helping children become successful adults.
